    UMD Department of Music Sinfonietta

As part of the UMD Department of Music’s mission to offer cultural and artistic enrichment to our campus, the community and the Upper Midwest through outreach and scholarly/creative activities, the UMD Department of Music Sinfonietta has been formed as a creative partner with the Minnesota Ballet’s production of the “Manhattan Nutcracker”. The Department of Music Sinfonietta is comprised of faculty artists from UMD, exceptionally talented undergraduate and graduate students from UMD, and local alumni and professionals. This “side-by-side” orchestra provides an artistic learning and performing experience to our students by placing them in a real, professional orchestra pit setting next to their instrumental professors and other professionals. The UMD Department of Music is proud of our partnership with the fine dancers, choreographers, designers and directors of the Minnesota Ballet, and we are happy to help ensure that Tchaikovsky’s wonderful, timeless work will be offered to Duluth audiences and families with the live orchestra to which they have grown accustomed.
